Kara Shrader didn’t just stumble into mental health care — she chose it with intention.
Having lived in rural areas and small towns where access to psychiatric care could be scarce, she witnessed firsthand the gaps in support for those who needed it most.
Determined to be part of the solution, Kara embarked on her career to bring meaningful mental health services to everyone — but especially those with far fewer psychiatric resources in rural communities — in states like Arizona and Colorado.
This Colorado- and Arizona-licensed mental health professional holds a Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health Science from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and a Master’s in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington.
With over a decade of experience in emergency nursing and psychiatric care, Kara’s calm-under-pressure demeanor, emotional intelligence, and quick decision-making make her a go-to no matter the issue.
Her professional background includes a decade of community involvement, including with Haven for Hope, where she provides care to underserved populations. This hands-on experience taught her that compassion and action go hand in hand — and that every patient deserves care that meets them where they are.
The throughline in her career has been that Kara listens intently to assess and address the unique needs of each and every one of her patients.
Kara’s patient-centered philosophy is rooted in education and empowerment. She’s the kind of provider who will not only answer your questions but encourage you to ask them.
This nurse practitioner providing mental health services and psychiatry in Colorado and Arizona believes that knowledge is power, taking the time to help patients understand their medications, expected outcomes, potential side effects, and the overall treatment timeline.
Building trust and strong relationships with her patients is at the heart of her practice, fostering an environment where individuals feel supported and informed every step of the way.
Outside of work as an Arizona and Colorado mental health professional, Kara finds joy in hiking, fishing, and practicing archery. She cherishes time spent with her husband and their ‘wild puppy’ (because let’s face it — what puppy isn’t??), as well as traveling to visit friends and family.
Curiosity is part of her DNA — she dreams of exploring the Galapagos Islands someday and doesn’t tire of hearing other people’s travel stories or unique interests. And, if you have a penchant for true crime, she’s willing to examine all the details of the case you’re obsessed with together.
A passionate advocate for unhoused individuals and economically vulnerable families, Kara volunteers at the Safe Haven Crisis Center, providing essentials and respite care for those in need. No matter your situation, she’ll meet you with empathy and understanding.
She knows that even small acts of kindness can ripple into profound change.
Guided by her mantra of ‘Every brain is different,’ Kara takes a personalized approach to mental healthcare. She understands that no two people experience mental health conditions in the same way, which is why she focuses on tailoring treatment plans to each individual’s needs, goals, and lifestyle.
Whether managing depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or OCD, her ultimate goal is to help each patient achieve a sense of well-being and stability, empowering them to lead fulfilling lives.
With her blend of clinical expertise and deep compassion, she creates a space where individuals feel safe to express themselves, work through challenges, and build a life that feels meaningful. Whoever she’s working with, Kara remains steadfast in her mission to make a difference in the lives of those she serves.
