A psychiatric evaluation allows your mental health professional to better understand your mental health needs. During your evaluation, we first obtain the information needed to diagnose the cause of your symptoms accurately.
Then we use the diagnosis and information to design a treatment plan and determine the mental health services you need to improve your mental health and overcome your challenges.
Your psychiatric evaluation is essentially a conversation between you and your mental health professional. Your mental healthcare professional talks with you, learns about your symptoms and concerns, asks questions, and uses standardized assessments and questionnaires that delve into behaviors and emotions.
They may also ask permission to talk with other people familiar with their behaviors and emotional issues when evaluating teens. For example, they may ask teachers, family members, or other health care professionals to complete a behavioral questionnaire.
During your evaluation, your mental healthcare professional explores the emotional, social, physical, and psychological factors that may contribute to your mental health issues. Examples of the type of information obtained include:
- Developmental history (for teens)
- Medical history of the patient and their family
- Information about family relationships
- Description of the patient’s emotional and behavioral problems
- Description of how their problems affect school and work performance
- Information about how their problems affect the patient’s social life
Your mental health professional may also do blood tests or other diagnostics to rule out physical conditions that could cause similar symptoms.
Cognitive tests, IQ testing, and other educational assessments aren’t usually necessary during the initial psychiatric evaluation. However, we may schedule them at a future appointment.
After completing your evaluation, the next step is creating a treatment plan. Depending on your diagnosis and the severity of your symptoms, your mental health specialist may prescribe a medication to ease your symptoms. Then, your mental healthcare professional works with you to determine the goals you want to achieve during therapy.
Your professional recommends the therapeutic approach that will work best for your personality, challenges, and goals. After defining your care plan, you schedule your first therapy appointment.
When working with teens, we may recommend an action plan for parents, giving them the tools to reinforce positive changes.
